Mara Whitten was our guest speaker last meeting, and the newest member to be inducted into our club. Mara is the new Program Manager of the Community Action Partnership of SLO, Inc., Adult Day Services in Templeton.
Although she has only been at the Adult Day Services Center a couple of months, our club's history with that center goes back almost a decade.
The Center provides day care for people with Alzheimer's, post stroke, and dementia. The Center occupies a ranch house located on Petersen Ranch Road not far from Twin Cities Hospital. They are licenced to care for 25 clients and currently they average around 12 clients almost every day Monday through Friday. Several rooms in the house provide office space and rooms for crafts, games, or just to sit around the fireplace.
The cost of the Day Services is on a sliding scale, and they turn no one away. Money is raised through grants, charitable donors, and fund-raisers.
During our charter year, 2001, our club sponsored a horseback "Memory Ride" fund-raiser. Over 24 riders bought tickets for a trail ride down the dry riverbed in Templeton. Riders came to the ranch house to register and for breakfast, and off they went to the river.
Our Rotary club was also responsible for purchasing a new heating and air conditioning unit for the ranch house, and in 2005 we built a green house in the back yard, which according to Mara, is one of the highlights of activities for the clients.
