Commander Ben Hall from the SLO County Sheriff’s Office presented our program last meeting. Ben is a 35 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, and has come up through the ranks. He is currently serving as the Patrol Division Commander.
Commander Hall shared with us the many responsibilities of his department which include, but not limited to: County Coroner Services, Court Services, Search and Rescue, County Jail, and Criminal Investigation. The Patrol Division serves approximately 110,000 people within the unincorporated areas of the county.
Ben talked about a lot of issues and challenges facing the Sheriff’s Department, like the loss of 25 positions due to budge cuts, the increasing risk that gangs pose upon our communities, and the issue with legalizing marijuana. Ben has done a lot of work with the gang problem, and he says the key is “prevention” because “policing” is a real problem. It has to be dealt with and prevented before it starts and spreads. Check out the Divisions & Units page on-line and learn more about the Sheriff’s Department and the services and programs available.
