It was a delight for our club to host our District Governor, Luz Maria Ortiz-Smith this week. Her official visit began with a warm welcome Monday night at Nancy’s home with food and friendship. Traveling with her were her husband, Russell, Assistant District Governor, Lisa Mumford, and Group 11 Rep, Patrick Hampton.
Luz Maria spoke to our club with humor and humanitarian compassion. Noting that English was not her first language and could be a little confusing, she drew laughter when she told us she realized there was no “egg in eggplant.”
Building on the RI President’s theme, “Rotary Is in Your Hands,” Luz Maria reminded us that “Rotary doesn’t just happen” and that the word Rotary ought to be a verb because “Rotary means action.”
Shifting to a message of peace, she said “Rotary programs are instruments of peace, not weapons of war,” and all that we do as a club “lays a foundation of peace.” She said there is “no single key to peace, but that it is the product of many single actions.” She reminded us that “peace is a process” and we as Rotarians are part of that process.
The DG concluded her remarks by saying, “It is the friendships between Rotarians that makes Rotary stronger and brings hope and peace to others.”
Luz Maria lived up to her name, and shared some light (“Luz”) in a dark world with her presentation and message of peace. Thank you.

We were glad to have had the opportunity to get to learn more about you and your passion for Rotary.

Dave contributed a wine basket for Luz Maria and her husband Russell. Thanks Dave!
