Dr. Deborah Bowers, Superintendent of the Templeton Unified School District, was our guest speaker last meeting. Dr. Bowers, a charter member of our club, taught school for 19 years in Bakersfield and Anaheim. She was the principal at Vineyard Elementary for 7 years and is in her 4th year as Superintendent for the school district.
Among the many challenges she faces, budget cuts top the list. 85 percent of the budget goes toward personnel and they are doing all that they can to keep staff cuts at a minimum. She reminded us that enrollment impacts the budget, and they have leveled off on enrollment. Some fundraising events are vital in assisting the schools with income.
Dr. Bowers says that she likes to look at “challenges as opportunities.” This year the Academic Performance Index (API), how schools are measured, is over 800 and is up from last year. Templeton Middle School had the highest scores in the county. For more information about the school district visit them on the web at www.tusdnet.net.
