In 1959, San Luis Obispo County secured the rights to 17,500 acre-feet of water per year from Lake Nacimiento. Today, construction is underway on this single largest water project that San Luis Obispo County has ever undertaken, the Nacimiento Water Project. According to John Hollenbeck, Nacimiento Project Manager, the project to date is 83% complete. John was our program speaker this week and gave us an update on the project.
The total cost of the project, including design, construction, environmental permitting, and right-of-way, is estimated at about $176 million. This constitutes 25% of the whole county budget and about 67% of the Public Works budget.
Templeton is one of five participating communities. The others are Paso Robles, Atascadero, SLO, and County Service Area # 10 (Cayucos). John gave us an idea of how much water Templeton would receive: enough to fill 521 million water bottles (standard size), or 125 Olympic size swimming pools.
The project involves the development of an intake and pump station at Lake Nacimiento, approximately 45 miles of transmission pipeline ranging in size from 36 to 12 inches in diameter, three storage tanks, two intermediate pump stations, turnouts, control center, new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Project control system, and associated appurtenant facilities. The project is broken down into five contracts, each contract representing a major project component. For more information on the project you can go to www.slocounty.ca.gov/PW/NacWP.htm. Look at an overview map of this project.

| September is New Generations Month |
“The days of our youth are the days of our glory.” For me, that is the line that springs to mind whenever Rotary’s youth programs are mentioned. In Rotary, September is New Generations Month – a time to focus our attention on our programs for youth and the role they play in shaping the Rotarians of tomorrow.
