Dorothy Lowe, former teacher, who taught in the Templeton and San Miguel School Districts, and local author, was our program speaker this week. She presented material from her book, Camp Atascadero and shared some interesting pictures.
In 1903 Congress passed a law reorganizing the state militias under the term "National Guard" and ordered that they would be trained to Army standards.
The War Department decided there would be four joint training exercises with the newly organized National Guard and the Regular Army. California was asked to host one of these sites.
Three sites were considered: the Naciemento Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, and the Henry Ranch, just south of Templeton. The Henry Ranch was chosen and the camp was named after the a nearest creek named Atascadero.
Soon after, in 1904, over 5,000 soldiers and 1,000 horses came to Camp Atascadero for training.

The Regular Army and The National Guard were joined into infantry divisions with supporting artillery and the famed Buffalo Solders of the 9th Cavalry Regiment. Commanding the division and supervising the exercise was Major General Arthur MacArthur, father of the famous General Douglas MacArthur.
