Chief O’Sullivan gave an outstanding presentation at our last club meeting on the history of the Templeton Fire Department. Greg will be retiring next year as Fire Chief, after 12 years of service. The first Fire Chief in Templeton, of “Hose Company Number One,” was C. M. Steinbeck (nephew of the famous author) back in 1887. That company eventually disbanded and the official formation of the Templeton Fire Department was in 1909 with only two chemical engines. Today, 100 years strong, the department has some of the best equipment in the county.
Chief O’Sullivan shared a lot of dates and historic events surrounding the development of the Templeton Fire Department, all of which can be found in a book that he is working on for the Historical Society (soon to be completed).
The Templeton Fire Department is a volunteer department but as the district expands the time is approaching to think about paid firefighters to complement the volunteer staffing. The Chief has information regarding a “Fire Assessment” dealing with this issue. For information you can call him at (805) 434-4911, or email him at tfd@templetoncsd.org.
