Subject: Julius Achon's Kristina Clinic in Uganda update
Dear Rotary Friends,
Thank you for your support of the clinic Julius is building in Uganda. Things are moving right along and I wanted to let you know that I spoke with Julius and Jim Fee yesterday afternoon and they have given us an update as follows:
Clinic construction is done. They are now putting in solar power, latrines and the incinerator. Regarding our grant, they have picked out the furnishings but these won’t be delivered until the interior painting is all done. They are looking at cold storage units and will make a selection on their next trip. Medications and medical supplies will be purchased closer to the actual opening.
They will be traveling to the clinic in late March or early April to hire additional medical personnel as they already have a clinic manager.
The clinic will open in late June or early July. Dedication of the clinic is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th. A Rotary group will be traveling to Uganda on the 21st for the dedication and will return to the US around the 30th. The back end of the trip will include a two day visit to the game park. If you are interested in traveling to the dedication, please let me know so I can forward details to you as they become available.
Finally, I'm forwarding an email I received from Jim with additional travel information and pictures. Please pass this information along to your clubs so they can see the good work they are supporting through Rotary and the Rotary Foundation.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Loretta Butts DG 2014-2015i
San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, 7 March
Hello Central Coast Presidents of Rotary!
In the attachment, please find exciting news from The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF). The Opening Night of the Festival, Wednesday, March 7, 2012, will be all about Rotary and our efforts to eradicate Polio by featuring the documentary - "The Shot Felt Round the World" at the Cuesta College Theatre!
This will be a Red Carpet Event, with a reception before the showing and 25% of the net proceeds will be donated to Rotary's End Polio Now Program. Wade & Roxanne Nomura have already confirmed that they will be in attendance for this great event. We would like the Rotary Clubs of the Central Coast to unite in sponsorship of this wonderful documentary and also be present "in force" to make it a true Family of Rotary Night.
The official letter above outlines the specifics and as Rotary members, we know that this will need to be presented to your individual Board of Directors. However, time is of the essence as the Festival wants to make the announcement in advance for Opening Night in the following week. Depending on the response by those Rotarian Clubs who want to participate in sponsorship and Rotarian members who attend the showing, the SLOIFF will also consider two showings of the documentary that evening - one at 6:30pm and another at 8:30 or 9:00pm. We would only need to know the number of people attending from each Club.
Bruce Ekmanian and I, from the Rotary Club of Grover Beach, will be the contacts for the event and please contact us at your convenience with any questions. We are also Board members of the SLOIFF. We are thrilled that the SLOIFF has chosen this documentary for their Opening Night. It is a great opportunity for Rotary, in that it will bring the awareness of our global Polio efforts to an even more current demographic, showcase the Central Coast Rotary Clubs who sponsor the film and also contribute 25% of the net proceeds from the event to End Polio Now.
To expedite this notice, we will also be contacting each of you personally to follow up and discuss how best to proceed with your individual Club's interest. Thank you so much for your consideration and we look forward to speaking with you soon!
Sincerely,
Bruce Ekmanian & Sandra Sansoni

Future Changes in Scholarship Programs
-----Original Message----- From: Nancy Falconer Sent: Tuesday, January 31, 2012 2:25 PM To: Nancy Fiske Subject: Rotary Dist. 5240 - Future Changes in Scholarship Programs
Good afternoon., I am forwarding this to the Club Presidents and International Service Chairs at the request of Pamela Lindsay, Dist. 5240 Scholarship Chair, as well as District Governors, Past District Governors, Asst. Governors and District Staff.
I am sorry to announce the termination of the Ambassadorial Scholarship Program. The Trustees of the Rotary Foundation voted to discontinue this program to be effective for the program year 2013. Our scholar for 2012 was selected in June, 2011. The Foundation will offer scholarship opportunities through district a nd global grants. This new grant structure gives Rotarians greater flexibility in sponsoring the next generation of leaders. Our district is developing a plan to implement this new structure.
The Peace and Conflict Resolution Scholarship remains unchanged.
Any questions or inquiries can be directed to me.
Pamela Lindsay District 5240 Scholarship Chair
Report from the Symposium (Foundation Future Vision)
From Nick Frankle via Nancy:
One of the breakout workshops at the Symposium to Eliminate Poverty Sustainably (STEPS) was an outstanding presentation by PDG Jan Lindsay on Future Vision. I personally found this to be one of the best descriptions focused on the "why" of The Rotary Foundation's Future Vision program.
In addition to the presentation, Jan had a hand out with a lot of related information. Click here to view the handout. Click here to watch the e-learn Overview Future Vision video.
Nick Frankle International Service Chair, Rotary Year 2012-13 District 5240
Rotary District 5240 and Rotary District 4160 invite you to go on a Hands-On Project Trip to Mexico.

Fire Training Facility Project...
The Rotary Club of Templeton is joining forces with Templeton Fire Chief, Jim Langborg to help support the development of the Fire Training facility. Currently a similar facility does not exist in San Luis Obispo County. Templeton Fire Department will make this training facility available to all county fire departments and hopes to encourage them to train together.
Jim has developed a PowerPoint presentation explaining the need and potential benefits of a local training facility. Chief Langborg and Templeton Rotary President Nancy Fiske will be taking this project on the road to inform other Rotary clubs in Paso Robles and Atascadero and invite them to share their support in this Community Service project.
