Dear Rotarians,

Here is an update on the Uganda clinic.  I'm still working on getting the final checks in but we may need to send what we have and then the balance in a week or so given that Julius is in Uganda to purchase items now.  Thank you everyone.  Please pass this information on to your clubs so they know where their support is going.

Best Regards,
Loretta

Hello Loretta and Daudi,

It has been several weeks since we have communicated so I am writing to update you on Achon Uganda Children and Kristina Clinic developments.

Julius, Grace and Jayden are in Uganda until January 20th; Julius and I speak 1-2 times per week. Kristina Clinic construction is going well; in fact the construction itself will be completed in about two weeks. Julius will be in the village on Wednesday and will take photos which I will send along to you.

We are now focused on living quarters and clinic furnishings. Julius, Grace, Jimmy and Florence will be choosing furnishings for the living quarters and clinic in the next couple of weeks. Julius and I though it wise to have the ladies involved. The furnishings motto is “sturdy first and attractive second”. They will be shopping in Lira where we have a quotation and in Kampala to compare prices and quality. Loretta, can you update me on the status of the Rotary grant as we are planning on using your grant funds plus Seattle Rotary (in the bank) to purchase the furnishings and the low power medical grade refrigerator for storing vaccines.

We have hired our first key employee, Sam Atia, who will be the clinic manager. Sam is from the village and was recommended by three respected community leaders including Julius’ father. I had the chance to meet Sam in September and really liked him. He is 29 years old, educated in Kampala, speaks very good English and his studies included sanitation and hygiene. He gives a great first impression – smiling and very genune. Unlike the majority of young men and women who leave the village for an education in Kampala, he wanted to come back to his roots in the village. He lives with and cares for his mother. He will start in December and we will send him to Engeye Clinic in Masaka, started by one of our board members Dr. Stephanie Van Dyke, for several weeks of training and mentoring by John Kalule, Engeye clinic manager who Julius and I have gotten to know well. Hiring Sam is a key milestone.

Lastly, be sure and pick up a copy of the January 2012 issue of Runner’s World on the newsstand Dec. 6th or thereabouts. We have seen bits and pieces of the article about Julius and his life – and are very excited. I could not be happier than to have Julius receive this well deserved notoriety.

Please let e know if you need anything from us and will send photos. One final thing – check out http://www.facebook.com/achonuganda.

Regards,
Jim
